I’m South African, which means I grew up believing two things: a good braai solves most problems, and anything can be fixed with a cable tie if you’re creative enough. Turns out those instincts transfer surprisingly well to building websites. HIGHSTREET-ME1 exists because I got sick and tired of hunting down what’s actually happening in Rochester — six websites, three Facebook groups, and a WhatsApp message from someone’s aunt that arrives “now-now” (which, if you’re not from SA, means anywhere between ten minutes and next Tuesday).

So I built my own. It looks like a simple old Teletext page on the front end — on purpose, that’s the whole charm — but under the bonnet it’s running on Cloudflare’s edge network, scraping a dozen sources a day, and leaning on AI to do the boring reading-and-summarising so I don’t have to. Growing up with load shedding teaches you to appreciate a thing that just stays on; this one barely blinks.
